• Chemical and pfysical characteristics in respect to air and water pollution are monitored in the department.

The following activities are performed in the department:

monitoring of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of surface and ground water, natural and artificial lakes, water used for land irrigation; qualitative characteristics of ambient air, precipitation and soil; monitoring of transboundary distribution of pollutants in the atmosphere; forecast of the tendencies of pollutants in the water, air and soil; data base update and organizing and keeping a cadastre of air and water pollutants.

Divisions in the department

• 5.1. Division of air, water and soil quality monitoring.

• Division of air, water and soil quality monitoring performes the activities which refer to:

• observations and measurements of qualitative characteristics of surface water,ground waterof first level, natural and artificial lakes, water used for land irrigation including water radioactivity in the station network and basic processing of recorded and measured values,

• monitoring of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of ambient air, precipitation and soil; monitoring of transboundary distribution of pollutants in the atmosphere ....

• 5.2. Division of laboratory analyses.

• terrain and laboratory measurements and investigations of qualitative characteristics of water, air and soil, by strictly determined, defined and anticipated methods and methodology of detection

• detection of parameters : physical-chemical, toxicological-heavy metals, organic micropollutants and other harmful and dangerous substances in the water, air and soil, by atomic absorption, gas chromatography with or without mass spectroscopy, liquid chromatography, ion chromatography and other instrumental techniques,…

5.1 Division of

air, water and soil quality monitoring.

• working out projects of station network for control and monitoring of the quality of surface, ground and waste water, quality of ambient air-emission and emission and quality of soil

• study-analytical processing and critic control of results of physical, chemical, toxicological, biological, microbiological and radiological analyses of surface, ground and waste water, classification and categorization of water according to analytical indexes and legal standards,

• study-analytical processing and critic control of results obtained by chemical analyses of air, precipitation and soil,

• information and warnings to the competent state institutions and organizations in the cases of emergency and extraordinary water, air and soil pollution, determining the causes and consequences of uncontrolled pollution,

• establishment of information systems of data collection on the state and predicted tendencies of water, air and soil pollution, providing of database, as well as keeping of water pollutants cadastre,

• working out studies, reports, analyses, information on the condition of the water, air and soil pollution, as well as application of models on forecasting of pollution level and methods of pollution forecasting,

• following scientific achievements in the field of water, air and soil quality and participations in educative-scientific seminars and courses organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO),

5.2 Division of

laboratory analyses

• determination and microscope processing of samples of plankton and benthal organisms, determination of anticipated level of saprobity or biological productivity according to

• standard methods and methodologies, classification and categorization of water currents and lakes on the basis of obtained data,

• measurements and investigations of the content of harmful and dangerous substances in waste water, that is output gasses of stationary and mobile sources of pollution,

• working out of chemical and biological analyses and other laboratory professional services for outside users ,

• following the scientific achievements in analytic chemistry and participation in educative-scientific seminars and courses organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

• participation in laboratory intercomparisons, in the country and abroad (world and European chemical centres for carrying out some programmes).

Activities

Main activities in the Division are:

• Air quality monitoring at 23 measuring points

• Measuring of stationary sources emission

• Monitoring and assessment of trans-boundary long-range distribution of pollutants in the air and long-distance precipitation

• assessment of changes in the atmosphere especially of those pollutants which have great impact on human health

• monitoring of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of surface water at 20 measuring points;

• periodical control of domestic and industrial waste water

• monitoring of chemical and toxicological water pollution and carrying out radiological and biological analyses etc.
